How do we address sensory issues in children with autism or sensory processing disorder? Each child is unique, but we find that really targeting the proprioceptive system can be helpful in calming the nervous system overall. So proprioception is just overall body awareness. So it's getting deep pressure input to the muscles and joints in the body.
And to do this, we may do things like a weighted or compression vest , deep pressure input, so giving squeezes, bouncing on the exercise ball, having them carry heavy objects like helping with groceries. These are all a way to provide proprioceptive input and this can help with calming the body and help with engagement, attention, and regulation throughout the day.
